    Archives & Special Collections at the SUNY Upstate Health Sciences Library

    Syracuse, NY

    The Archives & Special Collections of the Health Sciences Library (HSL) at Upstate Medical University is seeking an energetic and proficient assistant archivist to support the various roles of the department. The Archives & Special Collections contains university archives; rare books and journals; antique medical and laboratory equipment; photographs and slides; portraits and other paintings. The mission of the Archives & Special Collections department is to preserve records that document the history, organization, policies, activities, and people of Upstate Medical University and Hospital, and its' predecessor institutions, and the history of medicine, especially in central New York; and to make those records available to researchers.

    Responsibilities

    ·         Process archival collections according to accepted arrangement and description practices, including the creation of an EAD finding aid.

    ·         Maintain current and accurate donor, accession and collection records in ArchivesSpace.

    • Support the implementation of a university-wide archival records retention program.
    • Digitize materials according to best practice for use in NY Heritage online collections and input metadata into the METS based digital collections metadata manager.
    • Help with design and implementation of outreach projects including presentations and exhibits.
    • Respond to reference requests accurately and in a timely manner.

    ·         Represent the department at professional functions or as assigned.

    ·         Supervise student workers and interns.

    • Oversee the department in cases when the Assistant Director is out of the office.
    • Assist with other archival and administrative duties as assigned.

    Qualifications – Required

    ·         MSLIS, with focus in archives, or MA in Archives, Museum Studies or related field

    ·         Strong communication (written and verbal) skills

    ·         Ability to balance multiple projects while working independently

     

    Qualifications – Preferred

    ·         2 or more years of experience with archives and/or special collections

    ·         Experience with digitization projects and preserving digital materials

    ·         Familiarity with ContentDM and/or METS

    ·         Familiarity with EAD

    ·         Knowledge of ArchivesSpace and ALMA/Primo

    ·         Experience implementing archival records program

    ·         Experience cataloging rare books
