I had the good fortune to meet David Gracy very early in my work as an archivist. I joined SAA in 1970 and met David at the annual meeting in Columbus in 1972. Although I was older than he was, he was more experienced and I always considered him a mentor. He chaired the Committee on Ethics in the Archival Profession and I became the chair following him. We always had good, meaningful and enjoyable conversations, whether long or short. At his request I wrote a few short essays for The Georgia Archivist, and he once arranged for me to speak to the Society of Southwest Archivists (on ethics). I was the parliamentarian for the annual meeting when he was president.

In addition to his impressive intelligence, his quick mind, and his wide and deep knowledge on everything archival and many other subjects, I remember his unflagging enthusiasm. David's infectious optimism resulted in admirable accomplishments by him and many other people. I miss him and I shall never forget him.
