     A leading research institute is seeking an Archivist/Project Manager for a two-year contract position.

     

    The Archivist/Project Manager will focus on the administration and management of the photographic and audiovisual archives of a prominent publishing company. In this role, you will work the best and brightest to safeguard parts of African American history and culture for the public benefit. This role is located in Chicago, IL.

     

    MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

     

    Archival Collection Management

    • Oversees daily operations for the Archive
    • Applies professional archival principles and methods to the management of the Archive
    • Assures the preservation and security of the Archive
    • Develops, implements and refines operational and strategic plans and policies in alignment with the goals of the Advisory Council and stakeholders
    • Establishes written guidelines for archival processing
    • Assists with contracts and provides overall management and direction to consultants, contractors, interns and volunteers
    • Provides guidance in preservation practices, collection information management systems and collection outreach
    • Plans and manages processing and preservation activities in coordination with an archival services vendor
    • Assures accuracy, completeness, and currency of collection documentation
    • Collaborates with digitization specialists on coordinated processing and digitization of the Archive, to be completed in phases
    • Assists with researching and documenting intellectual property rights and managing licensing requests
    • Prepares grant proposals related to the Archive and manages funded projects
    • Supports and helps to coordinate Archive-related programs
    • Develops expertise related to the history of the archive and represents the organization at professional meetings to advance knowledge and appreciation of the archive

     

    Project Management:

    • Works with leaders to develop, monitor, and evaluate short and long range Archive project plans
    • Facilitates communication with the leaders and stakeholders
    • Assists leaders in the practical formulation of goals and objectives
    • Ensures adherence to project deadlines
    • Reports data relevant to leaders, including activities, metrics and project results
    • Contributes to budgetary and narrative project reports

     

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Graduate degree in archival studies, African American history and culture, art history, library and information studies, or a related field
    • Minimum 5 years of professional experience
    • Supervisory experience

     

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

        

    • Considerable knowledge of African American history and culture. 
    • Considerable knowledge of professional archival principles and theoretical concepts.
    • Knowledge of systems for describing, organizing, and managing archival holdings.
    • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement guidelines, policies, and procedures for all facets of archival work.
    • Knowledge of archival procedures as they apply to photographic and audiovisual materials and processes.
    • Knowledge of procedures for the registration, cataloging and creation of finding aids for archival collections.
    • Knowledge of research methods used in historical research.
    • Knowledge of preservation and storage methods for paper, photographs, audiovisual media, and digital materials.
    • Demonstrated ability to manage projects and direct the work of others.
    • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement project plans and meet deadlines.
    • Demonstrated ability to solve complicated problems by applying professional knowledge and experience.
    • Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
    • Ability to climb ladders and lift boxes up to 40 pounds in weight.
