Applying Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials (Manuscripts)

Instructors:

Margaret Nichols is the Rare Materials Cataloging Coordinator for the Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections at Cornell University Library. A longtime member of the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section of ACRL, she served on its Bibliographic Standards Committee for four terms between 2007 and 2017, and chaired the editorial team which wrote DCRM(MSS). She holds a Ph.D. in English from Cornell and a Masters in Library Science from Syracuse University.

Jennifer K. Nelson is the Reference Librarian for the Robbins Collection in Civil and Religious Law at the UC Berkeley School of Law. She holds Masters' degrees in Library and Information Science and Classics from the University of Kentucky, a Master's degree in Italian from UCLA, and a PhD in Latin and Roman Studies from the University of Florida.

Alison E. Bridger currently works as an Archives and Manuscripts Cataloger at the Wisconsin Historical Society in Madison, Wisconsin. She also teaches "Archival Arrangement and Description" at the University of Wisconsin-Madison iSchool. In the past she worked as a manuscripts cataloger at the Bancroft Library at the University of California-Berkeley Bancroft Library and as well as at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C. She holds a Master's degree in Library and Information Science with a Concentration in Archives from Simmons College.

Description:

This workshop will provide an introduction to DCRM(MSS), a new cataloging manual that serves as a companion standard to DACS (Describing Archives: A Content Standard) for those cases where the cataloger needs to describe an individual manuscript rather than a collection. The workshop will include a brief introduction to the manual's guiding principles; discussion of how the cataloging of a single manuscript differs from the cataloging of an archival collection or of published materials; an introduction to the treatment of major elements of the catalog record in DCRM(MSS) (such as the title, place of production and date, and extent); and hands-on practice in applying DCRM(MSS).

Attendees will acquire an understanding of the considerations involved in cataloging individual manuscripts, and will gain practice in applying DCRM(MSS) to the cataloging of different types of manuscripts commonly found in special collections using provided examples. 

The workshop is limited to 25 participants so please register as soon as possible to secure your spot. Registration is open until May 27^th.

Who should attend:

This workshop is ideal for archivists, special collections librarians, and catalogers interested in learning how to apply DCRM(MSS) when describing individual manuscripts. Participants should have experience in MARC cataloging using AACR2; familiarity with DACS will be helpful.

Student rates have been reduced to $40 per workshop. The Walter P. Gray III Education Endowment Fund Scholarship offers funds up to $500 for registration and travel to SCA workshops.
