    The University Library at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a (full-time, permanent) Processing Archivist. Under the direction of the Supervisory Archivist, the Processing Archivist will work collaboratively within the department to arrange and describe archival collections of varying formats, including born-digital, audiovisual, photographic, and paper materials. The Processing Archivist provides excellent service to users by promoting and facilitating access to collections through archival processing and by providing regular service on the Special Collections Reference Desk and remote reference services when necessary.

    The Processing Archivist employs archival standards and best practices to survey, arrange, describe, and preserve a wide variety of archival collections. The Archivist is responsible for using Guidelines for Efficient Archival Processing in the University of California Libraries to create EAD-encoded, DACS-compliant finding aids for these collections in ArchivesSpace that will be accessible to the public via the Online Archive of California. The Processing Archivist works with undergraduate student assistants in delegating processing tasks.
    The Processing Archivist works a regular shift at the Special Collections reference desk. The successful candidate may also participate in instruction and outreach activities, digitization projects, preparation of exhibits, acquisition of manuscript and archival collections, donor relations, and grant proposals as appropriate.

    In addition to the basic qualifications listed below, applicants with any of the following qualifications or professional experience are strongly encouraged to apply:

    • experience with the archival collection management system, ArchivesSpace;
    • project management experience, including creating processing plans;
    • experience supervising undergraduate students in a special collections library;
    • experience with detail-oriented work, including the ability to analyze and repurpose legacy inventories based on complex spreadsheets;
    • experience providing reference service, preferably in a special collections or archival setting;
    • experience balancing multiple assignments and projects;
    • ability to delegate tasks with an eye towards efficient workflows;
    • excellent communication skills and the ability to listen, negotiate, compromise, and adapt.

    The Processing Archivist will have the ability to prioritize, plan, coordinate, and complete multiple tasks in a timely manner; work independently as well as collaboratively; and work flexibly, creatively, and effectively, with interruptions, in a fast changing environment.

    We welcome applications from early career archivists looking to develop their expertise.

    The successful candidate will be a member of the Librarians Association of the University of California (LAUC). Research, publication, and/or service to the University and profession are expected for continuing advancement. More information can be found here: https://lauc.ucop.edu/.

    The campus is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through their assigned
